Mommy and me Baby Book Bag Program
For over 35 years, the Literacy Council of Southwestern PA has been working to eradicate illiteracy in Washington county and, more recently, in Greene, Westmoreland, and Fayette counties. Perhaps our most visible family literacy program though, is our “Mommy and Me Baby Book Bag”. Through this program, the Literacy Council gives a bright green bag to all new families, in both pre and post-natal units, at the Washington Hospital – about 150 bags per month! The bag is filled with materials that stress the importance of reading to children from birth, a free baby book, and generously donated items from our sponsors.

These bags and the good work that they do would not be possible without the dedicated staff within the Washington Health System. After the bags are stuffed, this hard working-team organizes and hand-delivers each bag. It is not a stretch to say that without their partnership and commitment, the Baby Book Bag program would be a thing of the past!

We here at the Literacy Council of SWPA offer our sincere thanks for all that the Washington Health System does for us and for our community. We couldn’t do it without you!
Thanks to all of our 2019 Baby Book Bag Sponsors:
